Effiom Nyong Effiom, Country Director, MSION Speaking live on Public Square
On Sunday, March 8, 2020, Marie Stopes International Organisation Nigeria (MSION) joined the rest of the world to commemorate the International Women’s Day (IWD). The campaign theme for this year’s celebration is ‘An equal world is an enabled world’.
At MSION, we marked the 2020 International Women’s Day event with activities designed to amplify the voices of women and support equality. We believe that gender equality is a matter of human rights, of democracy and of justice; and gender equality is a driver of social development which creates genuine change in societies and in people's lives.
Our celebration began on March 6 with a media appearance. Our Country Director, Effiom Nyong Effiom, featured on Public Square, a weekly news and current affairs programme hosted by Rotimi Sankore on 99.3 Nigeria Info, Lagos which reaches approximately 30 million people.
While speaking on Public Square, Effiom stressed the importance of women’s right to universal access to contraception. He noted that universal access to sexual and reproductive health and rights is at the core of empowerment for women and girls. He made the connection between investment in sexual reproductive health and rights of women and girls and how it connects to economic and social benefits including greater productivity, improved human capacity development and sustainable economic development.
As an organisation, Marie Stopes Nigeria promotes equal opportunity for women and enables women all over Nigeria to choose their own future through empowering them with the power of choice.
By empowering women with choice and capacity to have children when they are ready and prepared, MSION is -

- gives women opportunity to pursue their dreams and aspirations
- helps families rise above poverty
A woman who cannot take decision over her own body is certainly not empowered or enabled. MSION as a leading advocate for women’s health, especially their sexual and reproductive health and rights spoke up on the 2020 International Women’s Day and is championing advocacy on all front – media, policy, and community to ensure equal rights for women in Nigeria.
As part of activities lined up to commemorate the International Women’s Day, 2020, staff of MSION also struck the #EachForEqual pose which were used on our social media platforms to lead discussions highlighting the need and benefits of an empowered woman.
